English 원문
The top of the seed-tray shelf felt gritty instead of smooth, as though fine salt hid beneath its pale paint. Nina balanced a shallow wooden tray there, aiming to sort basil from oregano before Saturday’s planting. Frida, busy watering the beds outside, had left the shed door open, and warm air pooled under the tin roof while the stone floor stayed cool behind Nina’s shoes. Dried rosemary and lavender swung on the herb-drying hook, their scented leaves offering clues, yet the two seed piles still looked identical. Nina pinched one seed and rolled it; the coat released almost no smell. She had hoped a quick rub would solve the puzzle, but the similarity blocked her progress, and her shoulders tightened as the magnifying glass waited beside the packets like a silent curator’s tool.
Emil, a baker on his day off, set an oatmeal cookie on the window ledge and leaned over to help. He tilted the tray a few millimetres, thinking a broader layer might reveal size differences. The tilt tore a softened paper seam; hundreds of round seeds streamed across the shelf, dropped into a dust-coated ceramic saucer, and their combined weight nudged the saucer forward. It slid along the blue-grey surface, tapped the magnifying glass, and the glass cylinder began to roll. Its silver rim struck the cookie, sending crumbs against a stack of empty envelopes that started to slump toward the floor. Emil pressed a gloved forearm against the falling packets, absorbing their gentle force and halting the tumble. Above, faint dots of moisture on the roof panel continued to evaporate in the heat. Near the saucer’s lip, one last basil seed spun in a slow circle toward the shelf’s edge.
