English 원문
"Turn over a new leaf," Iris called.
Gareth flipped the damp sheet and the metal clips squealed as the fresh paper caught the board. A low hiss drifted from the brush he rinsed; pigment swirled in the cloudy cup like tiny storms that bumped the rim. The new surface waited, half-blank yet already humming under a thin film of clean water. Their earlier wash lay above, now dry and pale, the boundary between zones crackling faintly as the board shifted. A chorus of faint drips tapped the porch floor, matching the soft rasp of Iris’s brush stroking the wet edge. The palette had been arranged in a neat arc earlier, but several wells now showed only matte rings where vibrant colors once shimmered. Without speaking, the pair let these small sounds communicate what needed doing next.
Gareth reached for the blue well. His ferrule scraped the plastic; only a brittle crust flaked free. He dabbed rinse water onto the patch, listening to the tiny pop as the pigment soaked, then dragged the brush through the thin puddle. The mixture came out weak, almost grey. He laid a fast stroke across the wet zone, and the wash bloomed too softly, leaving a pale stripe that rattled the plan. Iris reacted by tipping the board so gravity pulled a deeper pool downward; water flowed with a muffled rush, yet the stripe still showed. She frowned but stayed silent, a small tilt of her head carrying unspoken gratitude for his quick attempt.
A sudden gust rattled the porch screens, drying the right edge faster than the centre. Iris swapped brushes, the wooden handles clacking together in the jar. She charged a wider brush with green and swept it along the threatened edge before it locked. The fresh pigment, thicker and louder on the paper, met Gareth’s repaired blue and fused in rippling waves, giving the lower section a rejuvenated spirit. Their final adjustment came in a hush: both leaned back while tiny air bubbles burst in the wet paint. Splashes of darker blue dotted the porch rail, and a single fingerprint of green smudged the bottom corner of the sheet where Iris had steadied it.
