English 원문
A steel shaker, a fogged milk pitcher, and three syrup pumps stood in a tight row behind the glass. Keane rolled his shoulders to ease the stiffness that spread after ten straight minutes of shaking iced tea. Two clear cups already waited, each half-filled with dark tea that swayed whenever the floor vibrated under passing footsteps. One order demanded extra sweetness, the other requested more ice, and their identical colours risked instant confusion. Condensation had blurred the pump labels, so Keane tightened his grip to judge syrup by the resistance under his palm. The first handle sprang back quickly, promising honey; the second moved dense and slow, likely brown sugar. He pressed the dense handle, felt arm muscles tense, and a ribbon of syrup sank through the tea like cold lava. Before he could seal the cup, a soft whine suddenly rose near the pickup shelf.
A spaniel with a bright collar had slipped its leash; it began to wander along the customer edge of the counter. Its muzzle brushed the straw dispenser, nudging straws so they rattled and rolled toward the narrow workspace. Keane’s knees bent at once; he sidestepped the shaker, reached over the glass partition, and guided the dog back with both forearms. The spaniel responded with an affectionate tail slap against his shin before trotting toward its waiting owner. During the brief rescue, steam from the pearl pot drifted higher, and fresh droplets slid down every syrup bottle. More importantly, the ice in both cups shrank, loosening the balance between liquid and chill. Keane returned, shoulders tight from the quick reach, and noticed pale streaks of melted water circling the tea like fading rings.
With no time to remake both drinks, he grabbed a long wooden stir stick from the utensil jar. He plunged the stick into the first cup and stirred firmly, letting arm muscles twist until syrup, ice melt, and tea merged. A stray mint herb leaf, shaken loose from an earlier order, floated up and released a bright scent that surprised his nose. He lifted the leaf with the stick’s tip, flicked it into the waste cup, and finished stirring the second drink. Satisfied by the even colour, he sealed both cups, arms pressing the lever for a steady three-second compression. The spaniel’s calm gaze followed the moving lights on the menu board while Keane placed the cups onto the pickup shelf. Behind the counter, the shaker still vibrated faintly from leftover ice, carrying its gentle rhythm into the next order waiting unseen.
