A lone gnat looped in slow circles where the paint bottle had hung only minutes ago. Tess crouched under the tripod base, the air carrying a sour-sweet whiff from yesterday’s red mix. The nylon knot had slipped, so she hooked the smooth bottle back, then, from the push-and-release zone, sent it gliding. Watered green paint escaped with a faint vinegar tang, and each pass laid a shimmering crescent across the hot paper sheet. One fat drop missed the edge, darkening clover at the border of the woodland strip. Black ants arrived, motivated by the sugary smell, forming a quick parade over the grass. Their movement drew a robin; the bird dived, wing-beats pushing dusty air that pressed a tripod leg deeper into the soft ground, shifting the pendulum’s centre by a finger’s width. A brief metallic tang rose where the tripod foot scraped a buried tin lid hidden under the soil.

The tilt spoilt the next swing: the arc slid sideways and left a darker trace that smelled like wet cardboard. Warm sunshine continued to encourage rapid drying, locking the mistake in place. As the robin fluttered away, a startled cricket sprang from beneath its feet, but the insect’s tiny body only brushed the paper, adding a faint speck of brown—nothing compared with the skewed path already spreading. Tess tried again, lifting the bottle slightly higher before letting go, yet the angle still pulled every line off-centre. She had prepared a flat stone at the mixing area; now she fetched it, the sack of poster paint on her shoulder releasing a chalky puff as she moved. Kneeling, she raised the sinking stick and wedged the weight under its point; crushed grass released an earthy, damp scent. The bottle that had been missing now swayed in a tightened half-circle, laying fresh colour that curved steadily toward the paper’s far corner.
