A paper plane lay on the bench with its left wing sharply creased, the right side still flat. Bright rays spilled over the launch hilltop, trimming the untidy stack of blank sheets with blade-thin glare. The chalk circle had been measured by an adult volunteer, the stick throwing a narrow shadow on the grass. Rows of panels from the school’s renewable energy project flashed on the roof behind them, and beyond the fence the town power grid cut dark lines across the sky. Wren added the missing crease, then traced a quick sketch of swirling marine life along the fuselage. The fish shapes flickered under the strong light between two swinging shadows. He clipped a small paper clip on the nose and jogged to the wind-reading spot. His first throw started smooth, but extra weight pulled the plane downward almost at once. It hissed, caught a brief glow, and landed in damp grass three paces short of the circle.

Dew had darkened the tip, so Wren removed the clip and pressed fresh ridges against the flat stone in the adjustment area. His flask rolled across the bench, flashed under the glare, and knocked the ruler into the grass with a clatter. Lars jumped back, the sudden noise tracing a jagged shadow through the quiet light around their feet. The ribbon on the stick twisted, showing the breeze had swung toward the far corner of the grassy expanse. Wren lifted the rear edges a fraction, crouched lower, and waited until the ribbon light faded before releasing the plane. It sliced forward, gleamed along the pencil fish, curved with the side breeze, and brushed the near edge of the chalk circle. A blackbird hopped toward the white shape, tilted its head, and pecked a loose blade that quivered beside the almost perfect landing.
