English 원문
The sky above the park was still overcast, but the lantern path already glittered with tiny points of light. Gemma had finished her star-shaped lantern at the craft station. Its frame had been shaped from thin steel wire, easy to bend but quick to twist out of line. She now walked beside Clara, whose unicorn lantern bobbed like a pale silhouette between tree trunks. A wreath of smaller paper globes hung overhead, their glow throwing moving patterns across packed earth and fallen leaves. At each step the fish-shaped lanterns by the pond sent flickers across the water. Gemma lifted a grilled corn stick with one hand and gripped her lantern pole with the other. A folded napkin, shiny with butter, clung to her wrist. When the crowd narrowed under a branch, her wire frame scraped the wood and twisted. The star tilted, and bright glare spilled unevenly through a fresh gap.
The girls reached the dim transition zone where lanterns hung far apart, and Gemma’s tilted star became her main light. Shadows stretched across the ground and made every wrinkle in the tissue more obvious. She paused and pinched the bent wire between thumb and nail. The frame shifted a little but swung back when she walked. If the wire bent again, the lantern would brush the ground. Clara stopped, transferred her pole to the crook of her arm, and steadied Gemma’s dowel so it stayed still. With both hands free, Gemma pressed harder and rolled the wire against the wooden shaft. She repeated the same movement but held the pressure longer. A low-leashed terrier darted across the path, bumping her elbow and jarring the lantern, yet Clara’s grip stopped it from spinning away. The second squeeze held; the star now hung almost level, though a faint glare still leaked through the earlier tear.
Hours later, after the final song faded from the loudspeakers, the lantern path stood empty. Soft gloom pooled where the wreath of paper globes had once glared, their batteries drained to pinpoints. A forgotten napkin lay near the pond, its butter stain now dull. The terrier’s narrow footprints interrupted the leaf drift at the water’s edge. Gemma’s repaired star hung in the lowest branch, left behind accidentally. Its uneven glow painted a thin fold of light across the still surface before the LED dimmed to a quiet ember.
