English 원문
Fine grit clung to Holly's palm as she pressed a fresh strip of sandpaper against the pine slat. Kay braced the board firmly against the rubber mat in the supply corner, shoulders squared. The instructor demonstrated silent saw strokes at the adjoining bench with slow, steady, even pressure. The wood showed a slight bow, so the first chalk guideline curved near its center. Holly had already rubbed it out once, lightly, with the side of her thumb. The board had been measured twice, yet the numbers refused to translate into a perfect line. They measured again and held the ruler tight between their thumbs and index fingers, then drew another mark. The grain dragged the chalk and left a faint wobble, but steady sanding smoothed the ridge beneath their palms.
Kay reached for the hand saw when the timer on the distant drying shelf rang out, sharp and sudden. The instructor looked over, and Kay instinctively hurried to silence the ticking box before glue on another project could dry unevenly. Holly followed and had to stumble around a bucket of offcuts that blocked the narrow aisle. At the shelf, they eased a newly glued picture frame—a model based on a stone chapel from an old photograph—onto higher supports. The whole task, from lifting to repositioning, lasted barely a full minute on the upper shelf. During their absence, wind through the open yard door rose, a brief gale that whirled sawdust across the room.
When they returned, their carefully drawn guideline lay hidden beneath a pale film of dust. The pine slat had shifted a finger-width against the mat while they were away earlier. The dust muted every corner, so forbearance showed in Holly’s slow breath as she brushed the surface clean without rushing. Even after she cleared the board, a faint scratch from the shift crossed the place where the straight edge once ran. Rather than erase the mark, Kay traced it deliberately, turning the straight frame into a gentle arch that echoed the chapel roof. The pine bent with mild resilience, accepting the new shape while the saw teeth moved in a steady rhythm. Holly was guiding the blade forward, wrists steady, as the new curve began to appear.
