"This chair still swivels too fast." The seat spun half a turn before stopping. Sam, steadying himself on the warm vinyl, lifted a magazine from the wooden rack beside a honey-colored lamp. His thirty-minute slot with Dean felt wide open, and the wall clock showed only five minutes past the hour. Warm amber bulbs lined the mirror stations, while conditioner fragrance drifted like a slow bloom from the styling floor. A mop leaned against the reception counter, its cotton strings already dry after scrubbing an earlier splash beside the water dispenser. Light struck tiny hair clippings caught in the shallow crevice between tiles, turning them copper against the dark grout. The dryer hummed behind the wall of mirrors.
Dean’s prior client remained under the cape, discussing fringe length once more, and the scissors paused. Minutes advanced on the pale clock face; twelve past turned to fifteen before anyone moved. Both washing basins filled, one with a towel drenched around thick curls, the other gurgling beneath a steady rinse. Sam had planned to enjoy a slow wash with the perfumed foam Dean had been saving, yet the shrinking window became clear. The floral foam had been advertised earlier as a summer bloom rinse, but its bottle now stood missing from the shelf. When Dean finally waved him across, the clock offered barely ten minutes. Sam lifted two fingers and aimed only for a brisk trim. He sank into the swivel chair, letting the unused basin continue its quiet flow behind him.
Dean moved with swift, practiced strokes, guiding the comb through damp strands while scissors flashed under the amber bulbs. A light mist from the spray bottle replaced the skipped basin wash. Fine clippings slid down the cape before gathering near the mop handle. No sharp click signaled the finish; instead, the final strand drifted free in near silence, and Dean whisked the cape away. Sam rose lighter by only a handful of centimetres rather than the broad restyle first imagined. Outside the glass door, late sun stretched across the pavement. Damp edges of his hair caught that gold as he stepped into the fading afternoon.
