A paper bag of seed, a cracked ceramic saucer, and a green leaf slid along the warm bench under a soft breeze. Reese shifted slightly, the raised wood grain pressing through his trousers while he watched sparrows crowd the feeder platform three paces away. Verbal communication offered nothing with birds, so timing and seed placement stood as his only practical tools. He had already poured a thin first layer before the breeze arrived, and a tiny solar fan beside him began to energize. Bright paint on the feeder roof might persuade others to pause, but the goldfinch on the tree branch remained undecided. Cut grass released a sharp green smell, mixing with the dusty scent of cracked sunflower husks scattered beneath the bench. Reese lifted the bag cautiously, intending to release only a few grains and keep most of the supply safe.

A stronger gust struck the lifted bag, spilling a ribbon of seed that bounced across the wooden tray and over its edge. The falling grains tapped a rusty hand rake, a farming tool leaning idly against the feeder post since yesterday’s gardening. Metal met wood with a thud, and the rake slid downward, its handle brushing the post before swinging toward the water dish. Seeds splashed after it, landing in the dish and sending thin rings that spread like ripples in gelatin. Sparrows burst upward, wings brushing like paper fans, before they regrouped on the lower branches of the tree. If the wind grew stronger, more seed would slide off and persuade others on the path to crowd the shrinking space. Reese lunged forward and caught the rake midway, the metal head hovering above damp grass while water rings widened beneath the dish. He stayed crouched, the tool balanced in his grip as the loosened seeds kept sliding toward the ground.
