The glue along the frame felt tacky, but the clamp handles beside it stayed dry and cool. Harris and Luna stood at the drying shelf, trying to map out a straight border on a thin lid that would top their wooden puzzle box. Greta, the instructor, ran a file across a chisel at the pegboard, her strokes giving the room a steady rasp. Chalk guides had been pressed lightly into the grain, yet a gust from the yard scattered fresh sawdust across the surface and buried half the marks. Harris brushed the dust away with the side of a paintbrush, leaving the chalk paler and uneven. Trepidation showed as a darker stripe where powder clung, so Luna dabbed a damp cloth across that strip until the line returned. They eased warm glue onto the edge, aligned the lid against its frame, and tightened a slim clamp. Nearby, a small kettle puffed quiet steam for afternoon tea.
A sudden rustle outside broke their rhythm; soil in the yard heaved, and a mole pushed up a crumbly mound before vanishing again. Curious, Luna stepped into the sunlight; Harris followed to watch the tiny hill collapse into loose earth. While they knelt, the kettle inside reached a full boil and rattled its lid. Warm air swelled through the studio, drifted over the drying shelf, and wrapped the glued lid in gentle heat. By the time Harris carried two mugs back, the clamp bar felt warmer than before, and the lid had shifted a finger-width to one side. The glue, hurried by the heat, had already skinned over; a crooked lip now protruded, hardening with each slow breath of warmer air.
Luna pressed her thumb along the overhang, but the seam refused to move. Instead of forcing it, she slid a narrow chisel under the proud edge and shaved away the thin excess, creating a clean step that echoed the puzzle pattern below. As a stop, she wedged a cool steel ruler against the frame so the line could creep no further while the joint finished curing. Shavings gathered in a soft curl beside the lid; one stray chip caught a bead of glue and, unexpectedly, formed a tiny spiral that glimmered like a polished shell. A lazy draft from the yard door nudged that bright curl, and it spun slowly across the shelf in the pale light.
