English 원문
Four paper cups remained on the baking tabletop, each leaning gently north and together drawing a neat diagonal line. The shared tilt puzzled Yves, because no wind touched the cups and no hand had moved them. A lemony cloud rose from the pitcher whenever he stirred, carrying a sweet-acid scent that pinched the back of his throat. Near the edge, sour droplets merged into a branching network that darkened the cardboard price sign and released a dusty wood smell. They soaked through slowly, leaving an earthy trace like damp flour after spring rain. Behind the cups, the sugar bowl’s lid breathed out warmth, as if a hidden furnace hummed underneath the table. He wiped citrus-oily fingers on a napkin and listened to ice crack; the cubes were growing scarce in the sun.
A pair of footsteps approached, and two teenagers paused beside the stand, noses twitching at the sharp citrus air. Yves poured a bright stream into the first cup and had already sprinkled one extra spoonful of sugar before noticing Harris adding another spoonful to the second. More sugar deepened the aroma—almost caramel-like—yet thickened the drink, while pale pulp flakes clustered like drifting plankton under the surface. Unsure which cup carried the stronger mix, Yves balanced a thin lemon slice on one rim, but it slid off and vanished into the syrup with a soft gulp. The scene reminded Harris of a traveler in a childhood fable whose bags grew too full to walk. Wanting a clearer mark, Yves scattered yet another layer of sugar over only one cup, building a pale hill that glittered under the light and smelled almost medicinal.
The overfilled mound slowed the liquid; when Yves tipped the cup, a sticky wave crawled along the rim and clung to his thumb. Harris had seen enough: he scooped the top mound of sugar back into the bowl with one swift motion, the grains pattering like dry sand. With that subtraction, the lemonade thinned at once, releasing a clean snap of zest that cut through the earlier heaviness. The teenagers sipped, cheeks tightening, then nodded and dropped warm coins into the box. A passing gust rolled a broad lemon leaf across the sidewalk and under the front leg of the table; Harris nudged the green leaf farther under the leg and felt the table stand firm.
