Ada sat nearby, her back against the trunk, and a page rustled each time sunlight shifted across her book. Bram the dog stretched his hind legs, rolled onto warm grass, and continued to bask while clover brushed his sides. Gemma intended to hang a flat seashell she had polished earlier, hoping for a brighter tone among the existing chimes. A low supply box lay open near her knees, its plentiful beads, bottle caps, and spare wires rattling whenever she shifted weight. Warm bark pressed against her forearm as she stretched, and the rough surface left faint lines across her skin. She tested the shell alone at the quiet spot, then knotted it between two wooden beads, and a profound hush swallowed its ring.

Eli jogged over from the wind-test zone, a small bag of dog treats tapping his knee and catching Bram’s attention immediately. One treat dropped onto the grass; Bram pounced, muscles bunching, and his sudden weight rocked the branch a little further. The dog jerked upright, tail brushing the chimes, and their strings twisted together so tightly that Gemma’s fingers met sudden resistance. Somewhere beyond the fence, a sprinkler hissed steadily, yet the changing rhythm of the chimes held their attention. A calm gust passed, each note sounded clear, dusk drew soft purple shadows, and Gemma placed the spool beside the open box.
