Fronds brushed one another with a short hiss, the sound sliding across the quiet fern hollow. June paused where the path split into two narrow tunnels of green, each entrance almost identical beneath the pale canopy. She had planned to traverse the hollow quickly, yet no marker stood in sight, only ferns leaning like silent gates. Cool blue-grey light filtered between the stems, hiding small details that daylight on the ridge had revealed earlier. A faint glint drew her closer; a half-buried steel-grey post lay behind stems, its arrow plate veiled by crusted lichen. The plate had been fixed at knee height by square nails, and rust stained the wood a dull steel colour. Using a delicate touch, she scraped the surface with her thumbnail, but the painted shape remained blurred under chalky flakes.

Dean waited a step behind, letting the surrounding stems interact with his sleeves while he held them apart for extra light. The first clearing attempt had loosened crumbs of grey-green growth, yet neither arrowhead nor triangle became clear enough to trust. June switched tactics only slightly; she dripped a line of water from her bottle, softening the lichen before pressing again. The damp layer peeled away in wider ribbons, and a sharp arrow finally glimmered silver-blue beneath the remaining film. As her nail lifted the last strip, a beetle darted out, startling Dean; a fern sprang back across the plate. They laughed under their breath, then angled the post upright, aligning it with the cool palette of blue-grey trunks in front.

The arrow pointed left, so June marked the turn with a twig, although the compass needle still wobbled over hidden iron. They advanced only a few metres before a second, identical fork emerged, proof that the hollow could confuse even careful walkers. They glanced at the cleaned post, then decided to backtrack to the boardwalk, trusting its visible craftsmanship as a steadier reference. On the way out, June pressed the earlier ferns aside again, water droplets still clinging where she had washed the plate. The fronds that had whispered at the start now bent outward, their tips darkened by moisture and streaked with crumbs of lichen.

ディーンは一歩後ろで待ちながら、周囲の茎が袖に触れるのを感じつつ、光を入れるために茎を押し広げた。最初の掃除で灰緑の粉はこぼれたが、矢印も三角もはっきり見えるほどにはならなかった。ジューンは少しだけ方法を変え、水筒から水を垂らして地衣類を柔らかくしてから再びこすった。湿った層は広い帯状にはがれ、鋭い矢印が残りの薄膜の下に青銀色に輝いた。最後の薄片を持ち上げたとき、小さな甲虫が飛び出し、ディーンを驚かせたシダがプレートの上に跳ね返った。二人は小さく笑い、ポストを起こして前方の青灰色の幹の冷たいパレットに合わせて向きを整えた。

矢印は左を示していたので、ジューンは小枝で曲がり角に印を付けたが、隠れた鉄のせいかコンパスの針はまだ揺れていた。彼らが数メートル進むと二つ目の同じような分岐が現れ、この窪地が注意深い歩行者さえ惑わせることを示した。二人は掃除済みのポストを一瞥し、より確かな目印となる板道へ引き返すことにした。その途中でジューンは先ほどのシダを再び押し分け、プレートを洗った場所には今も水滴が付いていた。最初にざわめいたシダは外側に曲がり、その先端は湿り気で暗くなり、地衣類の粉が筋を残していた。
