Glare spiked across the lens, and the tiny snail vanished into its shell before she focused. She dabbed the glass with her sleeve, yet fresh droplets landed as spray rode the next wave. Nora exhaled and edged back, leaving the streaked lens on the rock beside a bleached sliver of willow-hued driftwood.

Hugo stood farther up the boulder, adjusting his camera while gull feathers drifted through the warm air. Nora climbed to the dry observation rock, where loose pages fluttered beneath a pebble she used as a weight. She sketched the ring of barnacles around a limpet, lines spreading like patterns an artisan might carve into cedar. Water in the lower ledge channels drained and returned, its uneven rhythm a briny lullaby under the sharper calls of the birds. Between strokes she lifted a frond of bladderwrack, bubbles bursting as a hermit crab darted sideways. A brief speculation about its family stayed unanswered when the creature slipped behind a stone. The periwinkle shells on her palm had been polished smooth by sand over countless tides. She rotated each one slowly, then placed them back and brushed grit from her knuckles.

Nora knelt again near the upper shelf. A higher wave nudged the willow-hued driftwood, and the hand lens slid toward her boot. She caught the rim before it toppled into the pool, then held the glass lower and angled her shadow across the surface. The periwinkle emerged, antennae testing the quiet light, and the spiral of its shell filled the circle clearly at last. Hugo murmured approval from behind the camera, though Nora kept her focus on the moving lines. She lifted the lens above the pool, while unseen behind her heel, the pale driftwood slipped into the rising tide.
