Rough sandpaper dragged across the pine strip under Emil’s left thumb, and bright dust floated through a narrow shaft of light before landing on the worktable. He planned to coat two small coasters with beeswax, but the tin in front of him showed only a shallow disk of yellow chips — far below the rim he needed. Wanting to conserve every fragment, he tipped his toolbox and let the first scoop of crumbs slide into the glare-lit tin. The metal warmed almost at once; thin edges of wax bent inward like soft petals, yet the melted pool still stopped short of the halfway mark.

A burst of distant laughter rippled in from the yard just as a broader beam lit the tin directly. Heat built, the lower layer liquefied, and the quick expansion shifted the container’s weight. It rolled a hand’s breadth, sending a line of glossy wax across the ruler groove, where cooler steel forced a pale skin to form with a faint clouding. Emil caught the wandering tin, slid a flat plywood scrap beneath it, and lifted his forearm to cast a shadow, blocking the hottest light. He then crossed to the supply corner, picked up another small bag of chips, and sprinkled a second mound. Still not enough. One last search behind the pegboard produced a final cluster; when these pellets fell, the surface rose in one silent surge and kissed the rim — the exact threshold he had intended.

Fern arrived from the drying shelf, her frame catching reflected gleam along its edges. Emil poured the shimmering wax onto both coaster faces; each piece glowed, then dulled as a thin haze spread. Fern balanced the first coaster toward the doorway while Emil guided the second across the table, thin beads of wax sliding toward their edges.
