English 원문
The hook at Harriet's rod tip swung bare, the small sinker that should have glimmered there nowhere in sight. She lifted the line, squinting through dappled shadow under the willow to gauge what remained. A soggy knot of lake weed clung stubbornly to the eye of the hook. Harriet had tried to prise the weed away with her fingernail, but it refused to slide. One sharp pull made the tangle jump from the water. It slapped onto Xavier’s folded beach towel beside the shore equipment area. Xavier had volunteered to carry the bait box earlier and had left the towel there as a seat. The sudden weight dragged the towel forward; the edge struck the tackle box, and the lid sprang up. Spare hooks were scattered across the warm plank. The single fresh sinker inside rolled, bounced twice, and slipped through a board-gap with a soft plop.
Harriet stamped her shoe against the box, halting any further slide, but the damage was done. The float now drifted toward the mooring post, drawn by a faint current that glimmered where sunlit ripples met pooled darkness. She had hoped the sinker would hold the bait low beside the willow-root water zone. Without it, the line skimmed too high and the feeding window was closing. A grey heron lifted its narrow wings nearby, then settled again, still under the dimming glare. Harriet pinched the dripping weed, surprised by its heft. The very mass that had jammed her cast could steady the hook. She wrapped the tangle around the shank, using a splintered twig from the dock’s framework to pin it tight. When she eased the line back, the improvised weight drew the bait down and kept it clear of the drifting rope.
Xavier glanced up from his sketchbook but said nothing; the heron also watched, neck held in sharp silhouette. Glare from the horizon sank lower, turning her shadow into a long stripe across the deck. The float held steady in the striped light, no longer sliding. A faint tug bent the rod, then relaxed — a sign enough for this brief evening. While she waited, a downy feather released from the heron’s breast rode a slanted beam of light. It landed softly on the weed-bound hook, brightening the drab clump. A loose silver scale drifted sideways through the dim water beneath the dock.
