Wet snow pressed into Lucia's woollen palms, turning stiff fabric smoother under the new moisture. She tipped the plastic mould. A solid blue-white brick slid onto the growing wall, its edges shining against the older grey row below. A silver-feathered sparrow fluttered down, landing by the new brick so lightly the surface barely dented. Petra, working in the brick-moulding zone, scooped another load near the buried garden bed. There dense, sticky snow waited under a thin crust. Lucia had to stretch to reach the wall top. The height already touched her waist, and the entrance gap looked narrower than planned. When they began, Lucia had murmured a quiet vow that the gap would stay wide enough to crawl through later. A promise of extra support lay in the bucket of water on the porch. The bucket stood ten slow steps away, and fresh flakes kept thickening on the path. The shovel, once propped against the fence, slid suddenly, struck the wood with a dull clang, and disappeared into a drift.

The sound pulled Lucia away from the fort. She trudged to the fence, lifted the cold metal, and planted it upright before more snow could bury it again. During those moments, the yard kept changing on its own. When she returned to the wall interior, the sparrow was gone. A looping pattern of tiny footprints curved across the wet upper bricks like pale thread laid on stone. Meltwater from the bird’s claws had softened the fresh mortar line so each curve glimmered. If the snow keeps falling at this rate, the trail will vanish quickly. Lucia traced the gentle arcs with a finger, noticing they outlined the doorway edge she had wanted but never marked. She slid a new brick along the innermost loop, then packed slush into the hollow it left. That small adjustment braced the leaning side. Lucia stepped back from the snow wall, and loose flakes continued drifting into the footprints until both arcs dimmed.
