Five slender metal tags already dangled from the left half of the fallen culm bridge. The right half still waited bare, and a small drill bit rested behind Cruz’s ear. Nolan, an oceanographer home for the weekend, crouched nearby and raised his camera toward the shifting lattice overhead. His terrier watched from the gravel, ears forward and hind paws planted on a pale stripe of light. A fresh gust—small compared with a gale yet strong inside the grove—sent cold stripes of light racing over the gravel. Hollow trunks knocked in uneven rhythm, and the dog twitched at each sharp tok sound. Cruz’s goal was simple: mark ten spots where the bridge produced clear musical tones for tomorrow’s science club. The first five notes had been easy during early calm, but the rising wind now blurred each tap into the general clatter. He lifted a smooth stick, aimed at the sixth spot, and waited for the canopy to pause.
At last a quiet moment arrived between gusts, and Cruz struck the culm exactly where his chalk mark ended. The stick met the bamboo with a soft thud, yet another swirl of wind answered, burying the note beneath leaf noise. He tried again, tapping quickly like a drummer, but speed only spread the echoes into a muddled rumble. Behind him, the terrier bounded onto the bridge, its small weight enough to roll the trunk a finger’s width and shift every pitch. Several hollow culms had been chalk-marked earlier by gardeners, and their pale sides flashed as they rocked together. Those brief flashes reminded Cruz to change order rather than force, so he shifted position instead of chasing volume. He drew a plush sea cucumber from his pocket, dropped it on the gravel, and the dog stepped down to sniff. Cruz kept his stick poised, counted three breaths, then timed a single strike during the lull that followed—the note rang clear. He lifted the sixth tag and hung it beside the others on the newly discovered pitch. At that instant, a strip of translucent plastic, once part of an ocean cleanup banner, drifted from the highest leaves. Sunlight caught the fragment, and it fluttered sideways like a jellyfish bloom before landing among the stones. One silver tag swung gently above a fresh scatter of pale plastic flakes on the gravel.
