English 원문
The metal arm of the folding chair felt tacky instead of cool when Mae pulled it closer to the patio table. A smoky pepper smell drifted through the swinging kitchen door each time a cook lifted a sizzling frypan. It mixed with the patio’s faint floral breeze. Mae had already sprinkled salt, yet the sauce bottle refused to move; a sharp tangy scent was trapped beneath its lid. She pressed her thumb, let the sticky top pivot a fraction, and warm vinegar air escaped like a hiss. Encouraged, she tried to unfold the stuck cap completely. She twisted harder until it popped free with a muffled thud against the condiment caddy.
As the cap jumped back, a bead of bright sauce arced onto a basil pot beside the railing. Its fresh herbal smell thickened instantly. A sparrow landed to peck the glossy drop, wings beating the table’s edge and flinging a napkin upward. Steam from the inside coffee machine curled through the doorway like a tiny kraken, pushing the loosened napkin farther toward the aisle. The drifting square brushed the nose of a terrier dozing under another chair. The dog snapped awake, drawn by the sour-sweet scent, and lunged for the basil pot. Metal legs scraped and the table shivered, water glasses wobbling near their rims.
Frida slid the dessert menu between the charging terrier and the sauce, blocking the sudden raid with quiet firmness. The dog paused, confused by the papery wall, and its owner tugged the leash short. The small cascade stopped before any plate spilled. On Mae’s plate, the colours now looked like a tiny potluck—random splashes of red sauce beside golden fries and pale fish. She tasted the mixture; smoky pepper, sharp vinegar, and sweet basil blended better than planned. Wind from the street nudged the umbrella overhead, rocking the canvas in a slow, steady sway. The fabric kept drifting across the patio tiles.
