Ink had already dried in the ridged groove of one roller when Cora stepped into the craft corner, aiming to press a fresh fern before the bus set off. The timetable posed a conundrum; only one table allowed another visitor, and the wall timer showed six minutes left in the slot. Her deduction formed on the spot: keep her hands busy so no one asked her to wait. She rinsed a stiff printing frame under the cool tap, beads of water running over the grainy wood. A speaker in the corner replayed a distant storm for the weather exhibit, its low rumble trembling through the planks. A sudden shout out from the corridor lured the last pair of guests toward the mounted owls, and Cora slid into the newly vacant seat, the newspaper surface still damp and softly creased.
She pressed the fern between the frame and an ink-soaked pad. The pad’s rubber edge caught the measuring jug beside it, and the half-filled jug tipped, releasing a slow sheet of cold water. The splash set off a gentle slide: bark-chip samples stored on a flat board floated forward, then brushed a row of stacked ink pads. Each pad moved only a fingertip’s width, but the staggered motion threatened to smear her print. If the jug had been full, the splash would have soaked her work completely. The jug itself had been placed too close to the edge earlier, and that small choice now rippled across the table. Cora grabbed a folded cloth from the drying rack and tucked it against the creeping chips; the fabric absorbed the last trickle, halting the miniature drift. A thin ribbon of water continued to inch across the floorboards, carrying bright specks of brown ink toward the metal drain.
