Chalk grit rasped under Lars’s fingers, releasing a dry, lime-tinged scent that mixed with the warm plastic breath of open paint buckets. A strip of red had been brushed across the bumpy mortar joint that marked the border with Olive’s section, and Lars needed green to cover the bleed before the shadow line slid lower. At the paint-supply tarp, the main green bucket was already tilted beside Floyd, so Lars scooped thick yellow and watery blue into a shallow tray. Resinous sweetness rose as he let the stick drag through the mixture; a tough skin floated up, cracked, and broke apart like sleet sprinkled into soup. He dipped his brush, but lumps clung to the bristles and threatened to stumble onto the wall in dark clots.

While he beat the brush against the tray’s rim, Olive shifted her roller. The metal frame nudged his elbow, the tray jerked, and a ribbon of half-mixed paint sloshed onto the sun-warmed tarp. The spill spread fast, carrying foamy rinse water downhill along a tiny wrinkle in the fabric. The stream wavered toward a cluster of buckets, its sour acrylic smell gaining a peppery edge. Lars pinched the tarp corner, lifted it, and formed a low ridge; the liquid pool slowed, then turned aside and thinned until only streaks remained. Soft breeze drew more chalk dust, which settled on the wet surface and dulled the shine. A pale smear now glossed Olive’s sneaker toe, but she only raised an eyebrow and kept rolling. Near their feet, green-and-white streaks crawled over the tarp’s fold, leaving fresh stains that drifted inch by inch toward the drain slot at the curb.
