English 원문
A rolling pin dusted with clay, a square wooden stamp with a darkened handle, and a wire loop waited on Luke's station. He pressed the stamp into the cool slab, aiming for a neat border along one edge. At first touch the surface felt pliant, yet a hidden nubbin of stiffer clay pushed back unevenly. One side sank deep; the opposite corner barely marked, leaving a tilted structure. Thin ooze curled around the low edge, blurring the carved lines. A thin bead of clay had been pushed aside by the misaligned corner, marking the trouble spot like a muddy arrow. Luke frowned, lifted the stamp, and watched the impression sag further as moisture crept outward.
He stepped away, sliding the skewed tile aside to clear space for Bram, who was rolling a fresh slab nearby. The rolling pin murmured across the grainy tabletop, then drifted downhill as the table’s slight tilt nudged it. Luke caught the pin before it met the sink-side puddle where water dripped from half-dry cloths. At the wet cloth station, he wrung a cool rag over spare clay lumps; mineral scent rose with the mist. A pigeon outside the high window flapped suddenly, showering dust from the sill onto the drying rack Bram had been tidying. Bram let out a brief chuckle at the dusty cascade, then kept arranging the tags. Luke brushed specks away, then helped slide the upper shelf forward so sunlight reached a row of slower tiles. His hands worked sponge, shelf, and rag, changing grip and pressure without thought, muscles reading textures rather than patterns.
Back at his station, he set the damp sponge down; someone had nudged the square stamp nearer the slab’s center. Without pausing, he placed both palms on its warm handle, easing force across the grain instead of driving straight down. The denser patch resisted, yet the pressure shifted through his wrists, and the block lowered level, breath by breath. He lifted slowly; every edge of the rosette stood clean, no ooze, no tilt. If he had pressed with that same sweeping force earlier, the border would have warped again. Cool air drifted over the fresh imprint, and its faint moisture touched his knuckles like evening dew.
