English 원문
“Stay put?” Tara whispered as the violet balloon cluster slid down from the ceiling corner the moment she removed her hand. The smooth tape loop she had pressed moments earlier now hung limp, its edge curling like warm ribbon. Hugo, at the tying chair, guided scissors through another string length, his back toward her. A ginger cat lounged near the kitchen doorway, ears twitching at every wheeze from the hand-pump. Tara peeled away the used strip, exchanged it for a fresh square, and climbed the low stool again. She tightened the knot at the balloons’ necks, smoothed the tape against the textured plaster, and held the cluster for ten slow breaths. Warm air drifting from the oven hastened a faint peel; a soft crackle followed; the balloons sagged a finger’s width, then dropped, bumping her shoulder before bouncing onto the carpet with a rubbery thump.
Not giving up, Tara pressed the tape a second time but altered the angle, pushing upward until her fingertips whitened against the plaster ridges. The loop had been folded inward first, so more adhesive reached the ceiling grain. For a heartbeat the arch of balloons curved like a tiny chapel roof beneath the ceiling light; then a stray draft shoved the bright shapes sideways. They brushed a streamer, and that crackling paper swung down, nudging the ribbon spool on the chair. The wooden spool rolled off, tapped the carpet, gathered speed, and struck the pump’s metal lever. The lever rocked; a half-filled green balloon beside it hopped off the table, tapping across the floor. The cat’s pupils widened, and it sprang, landing squarely on the rolling spool; claws bit, momentum stalled, and ribbon unwound around its paws. The balloon cluster still hung, tilting yet holding, while a single ribbon strand continued to unspool across the warm carpet in a loose spiral toward the dark sofa.
