English 원문
Flour dust lay soft across Vera’s palms. A tidy row of pale rings pressed into the packing table caught her eye at once.
The weight scale beside those marks swayed left and right with each low tremor from the turning shaft overhead. Its needle quivered like a tiny flag. Above, the leather drive belt slapped, and the hopper kept its steady jiggle, shaking grain down to the hungry stones. Vera adjusted her stance; powder slid under her soles, and her calves tightened to stay upright. Through the narrow window she glimpsed a bright glade beyond the racing sails, sunlight flashing over grass where a single daisy bobbed. Each vibration nudged the rings a grain’s width toward her, tiny shifts she could see but not quite feel. Jude swept near the doorway, raising thin clouds, yet the matched rings stayed clear against the darker wood.
Vera meant to record an exact weight for the first flour bag before Jude carried it away. She slid the scale so its legs sat within the nearest ring, thinking the wooden outline might hold it steady. Another gust caught the sails; floorboards quivered harder, and the needle leapt in wide arcs. She gripped the metal bowl with both hands, forearms rigid, but the motion refused to settle. If she had kept wrestling with the swaying needle, the groove alongside the rings would have gone unnoticed. Her fingertip grazed that shallow channel; the scoop’s rim slipped into it and stopped flush with the surface. Instead of chasing shifting numbers, she set the cloth bag beneath the chute and counted five even scoops. After each portion she returned the scoop to the channel and saw its rim meet the wood again.
The filled bag pulled firmly against her shoulders as she tied the string and heaved it onto the stacking bench. A spare morsel of warm flour spilled over her wrist and tumbled to the floorboards, joining the pale dust sea. Vera slid the spare wedge back into the tool nook, and a lone daisy petal drifted onto the warm millstone behind her.
