No soft patter followed the bottle’s first swing across the sheet. Griffon leaned closer, waiting for any drip and finding only a hushed pause. The bottle had been filled with thin blue paint earlier, yet the steady flow refused to begin. An oval band of green, laid minutes before, already dulled under the sun. The tripod base, braced by three flat rocks Olive had arranged, gave a slow creak when the plastic body glided back. Olive, at the mixing area, stirred new colour; the stick rattled against the cup while water gurgled from the jug. A small spaniel completed a lazy stroll nearby, tags chiming with a charming ring. One tag tapped an open lunch box, shaking loose a faint rattle from a spoonful of dry quinoa grains left inside.
Griffon unscrewed the cap a half-turn; threads crackled, and a brief slosh rolled inside the bottle. When he rehung it, a sharp snap of string announced fresh tension. Droplets resumed, tapping fast across the paper and reviving the fading rhythm. Extra weight, however, pulled the bottle lower; the wet string stretched, and every lowest sweep ended with a wet scrape that dragged turquoise over the neat oval arcs. He kept his palms clear: if the wind picked up, the pendulum would swing even wider. Two swings later he timed a lift; as the bottle slipped past the left stick he pinched the string higher and tied a tight knot against a dry section.
The knot raised the bottle a finger’s width, quieting the scrape without choking the drip. A pale turquoise smear still cut through the earlier rings, while new taps landed in a thinner chain, leaving silent gaps between notes. The spaniel sniffed the cooling paint, ears flicking at every distant crow, then curled beside a corner stone. Griffon stepped back, colours speaking through rhythm rather than perfection. Across the sheet, the pendulum continued its uneven music, and a breeze carried the faint pattern of sound beyond the garden hedge.
