"Check the window shelf," Sam called.

Clara turned sharply, and a wren flicked its rust-brown tail along the warm aluminium frame. Honey-coloured light flowed in from the tall pane, painting staplers and pens on the nearby desks with soft copper edges. A faint smell of fresh coffee drifted from the break room, and distant keyboard taps blended with the printer’s steady hum. Clara steadied her elbow on the window desk. The tiny bird faced the corridor lamp the sensor had just triggered, casting an amber stripe across the carpet. Sam drifted a step nearer, shoulder brushing Clara’s as they watched.

Sam had already slipped his phone from his pocket, its lens catching the glow like a pavilion roof glazed by sunset. Clara noticed the step ladder leaning against the wall; the upper window latch still waited far above her reach. The ladder had been placed there after a morning bulb change, yet no one had returned it to the supply closet. When Sam lifted a foot toward the lowest rung, Clara’s palm met the rail at the same instant, and both froze. If Clara had climbed alone, the ladder would have wobbled on the soft carpet. Instead, she tipped her chin toward the pane while Sam steadied the frame, silently dividing the single resource between them.

Clara climbed two rungs as Sam pressed his weight against the side, and the ladder held firm. She pushed the latch; warm air rolled in, carrying lawn clippings, coffee steam, and a distant shout beneath the courtyard pavilion. The wren darted upward, yet instead of flying outside it hovered above the printer and tugged a fresh ribbon of paper. Hidden behind the monitor, a teaspoon-sized nest of softer shreds had been woven through spare staple wires. Sam whispered that the close shot might upgrade his portfolio, and Clara’s shoulders lifted in a quiet laugh that jiggled the ladder. The wren released its prize, and the golden fragment spiralled downward until Sam caught it and tucked it into his portfolio sleeve.

「看窗台，」山姆喊道。

克拉拉猛然轉身，一隻鷦鷯在溫暖的鋁框上輕甩赤褐色的尾羽。蜜金色的陽光從高窗灑入，把釘書機與原子筆鍍上一圈柔和的銅光。休息室裡的新鮮咖啡香若隱若現，遠處鍵盤的敲擊聲與印表機穩定的嗡聲交織。克拉拉把手肘撐在窗邊桌上。小鳥面向走廊的燈，那盞燈剛被感應器啟動，在地毯上投下一道琥珀色光帶。山姆向玻璃再靠近一步，肩膀輕觸到克拉拉。

山姆早已把手機掏出，鏡頭在光裡閃耀，像夕陽下上釉的亭頂。克拉拉注意到靠牆的踏梯；上方的窗扣仍高在她夠不著的地方。那梯子早上換燈泡時被擺在這兒，卻沒人再搬回儲物間。當山姆把腳抬向最下層梯級時，克拉拉的手掌同時按在扶手上，兩人都僵住。若是克拉拉獨自攀爬，梯子在柔軟的地毯上恐怕搖晃。她抬下巴指向窗戶，山姆則扶穩框架，無聲地共享這唯一的工具。

克拉拉上了兩級，山姆把身體抵住側邊，梯子保持穩固。她推開窗扣，溫暖的空氣湧入，帶來草坪剪屑、咖啡蒸氣與院子涼亭下遠遠的呼喊。鷦鷯衝高後沒有飛出，而是停在印表機上，扯下一條新的紙絲。顯示器後方，一個茶匙大小、用更柔軟碎紙和訂書針織出的巢已悄悄成形。山姆小聲說近距離的畫面能替作品集升級，克拉拉聳肩輕笑，梯子微微晃動。鷦鷯放掉口中的戰利品，金色紙片盤旋下落，山姆在半空接住，將它塞進自己的作品集夾層裡。
