A wobbling paint tray, a sun-warmed ladder, and three half-full buckets rattled softly against one another at the edge of the tarp. Above them, brick faces released tiny pops as trapped moisture met the growing heat, while Troy dabbed violet onto the shaded lower half of grid square nine. The mural design showed a large iris flower beneath a chalk outline of a smiling patriarch drawn in the neighbouring row, and Troy had mixed extra white to brighten each petal. Roller strokes behind him made a slow squelch, yet his wide brush only whispered because the brick still held dampness near the shade line zone. Confident in that cool patch, he began to whittle the wide violet mass into slimmer folds, leaving fine mortar ridges peeking between strokes.

Minutes later, the breeze stilled, and sunlight slid downward with a faint crackle of expanding mortar. A new hiss rose where fresh paint met the now-hot surface; Troy could not overlook the sudden change in pitch. The upper petals dulled before his eyes, their colour lightening where evaporation raced ahead. He had planned to add two unopened buds beside the bloom, yet the drying gradient shrank his workable time. A quick glance showed Hana still borrowing the green bucket, so no border fix could happen soon. The bricks felt warmer each second, and the whisper of his brush hardened into a dry scrape. Accepting the limit, he focused on the single central blossom, letting the rest of the square remain plain background brick that might later cultivate real climbing ivy planted at ground level.

He stepped back as a rumble of roller drums echoed farther along the wall, measuring what remained: one deep violet flower surrounded by untouched red dust from earlier chalk marks. His shoulders loosened when the petal edges held together despite the uneven tones. A single drip slid from the lowest petal and landed on the tarp with a muted tap.
