Ridges on the wooden frame scratched against Alma’s gloves as she eased it from the open hive, the adult beekeeper watching a few steps behind. She shifted the frame’s weight against her chest, knees bending to keep balance while the hum of thousands of wings pressed through her suit. At the examination table she dropped the frame into a metal holder; thick honey inside flowed, tugging her forearms downward. The small jolt rocked the bench. A rubber mallet, used earlier to loosen a sticky super, rolled along the slight slope, tapped the bellows of the waiting smoker, and a cool grey cloud rushed out. A robin hopped eagerly in the grass below, startled but unfazed, as the mallet teetered on the edge.

The mallet tipped, struck the smoker’s lid, and the shock shook a glowing ember. A brief blaze flared inside, sending a warmer ribbon of smoke over the frame. The extra heat gave a clear revelation: one corner of the comb still shone uncapped. Alma planted her boot beside the canister, stopping its slide before it could reach the dry burlap fuel. The shift pressed the table slightly sideways; the frame holder leaned, and syrup-slow honey rolled toward the lower bar. Three bees landed on the sticky thread instead of the brood cells. A breeze, nurtured by sun-warmed clover across the meadow, bent the smoke away from the hive entrance and the flight lane steadied again. Alma slid a flat stone against the smoker’s base, pinning it firmly. Thin smoke spiralled upward beside her boot, twisting toward the open sky.
