English 원문
Vance guided a shoebox parcel onto the honey-glow platform of the package scale, aiming to read the blinking digits. He had spent the morning wrapping the box for his cousin, who would unwrap the seeds beside a garden suffering drought. The goal seemed simple, yet a tall load of charity magazines already covered the scale and blocked its display. Their glossy covers reflected amber ceiling light while their weight pressed the plate down so far the numbers refused to settle. Vance bent, tried to shove the stack aside with both palms, and discovered the bottom edge gripped the metal lip. His shoulders tightened; the heavy mass still refused to shift even a single millimetre today.
A warm draft followed a new visitor through the entrance door and scattered loose customs forms from the side table. One form containing Vance’s neat handwriting slid under the magazines and threatened to disappear forever among waiting feet. He crouched, spotted the serrated packing-tape dispenser resting nearby, and pulled it closer; the magazines’ weight would help once they were moved. If the magazines had been lighter, they would have slid at his first push, leaving nothing sturdy to hold the swirling sheets. He slid the dispenser handle under the bottom magazine and pressed, the glossy stack tipping clear of the scale. Vance guided the magazines onto the desk, where they pinned the fluttering sheets, and the draft could tug no more. Free space now shone on the plate, so he set the shoebox back and watched the digits blink into steadiness.
The screen showed four hundred forty grams, well within the price range he had calculated during last night’s quiet distribution of coins. He began to unwrap carefully the loose tape end he had twisted earlier, then used it to secure the printed label. A clerk pressed a stamp onto the honey-brown paper, and the parcel slid into a canvas crate heading for farms farther west. Vance held the weight receipt, while his grandparent gripped the shoebox, studying the fresh ink mark. The number-board beeped again, with the receipt in Vance’s pocket and the parcel in grandparent hands under amber glow.
