The coil of green twine bounced against her hip as she crossed the bright threshold. Between mist bursts the air stayed clear long enough for careful work, so four empty hooks waited beside the back-lit slats. Moments earlier, she had peered through the glass from the corridor and timed each quiet gap at almost two minutes. A low groan from the outer door echoed, and a ribbon of warmer air slipped across the floor. The sensor responded at once. An early grey cloud billowed waist-high, scattering the shafts of light and shortening vision to an arm’s length. Droplets clung to the twine, slowly adding weight that fought her wrist like gentle inertia. She finished the first knot only seconds before the next burst hissed through the dim air. Steam-free yet heavy, the water framed a stray dragonfly so its wings flashed in strobing glare. The insect vanished toward the darker roof where overlapping shadows hid its route among metal ribs. Kira counted only forty seconds of pause before another burst; the resource was shrinking in front of her measured breaths. She worked quickly during the brief clearings, pulling the twine tight until light reflected along the stretched fibres. Two hooks remained empty by the time the floor glimmered with scattered beads of water. She wiped her palms on her trousers without looking at the unused mounts beside her knee. The outcome stood visible: a pair of orchids swayed gently, each outlined by a faint halo where droplets caught the ceiling glare. Mist swirled around the two neat mounts and kept drifting across the dim teak slats.
