Sugar Rings and the Fifth Lid-

English 원문
Sticky syrup lined Glen’s fingertips as he traced three glossy rings left on the prep counter; each ring sat the same neat distance from the next. A sweet-sharp cloud rolled from the copper kettle, coloured now a deeper ruby than the raspberries Glen had crushed. Vinegar steam drifted from the sterilising basin, turning the air prickly against his nose, and the basin itself worked like a small reservoir, holding its heat while glass jars dried nearby. Above the misted window a ceramic seagull hung, chalk-white wings speckled with flour dust. On the far counter Oscar arranged the jars so their mouths shared one orientation, all facing the stove. A cluster of metal lids had been glued together by cooled syrup; Glen prised one free, sugar crystals scraping like sand as they fell to the mat.
The jam thickened; each bubble burst with a damp pop and released a richer, almost woody smell. Glen loosened a second lid, then a third, yet the heap beside him still fell short of the five jars waiting. Sugar on the fourth lid resisted, grain after grain sticking to the rim until a drop of warm water melted a path, letting the circle slide away. He paused, palm warming suddenly on the spoon handle—heat had climbed the copper over time without warning. Glen flexed his fingers, decided to continue, and twisted the final pair; the thin crust softened under his thumb, and the upper lid lifted, leaving a clean circle gleaming beside its partners.
At the same moment, faint gossip floated from the hallway where neighbours compared weekend lifestyle choices over the open door. Glen slid the fifth warm lid onto the waiting jar while the quiet chatter echoed from the corridor.
