She scooped the wet towels into the drum, thud after muffled thud, and shook in a pinch of granular detergent left in her measuring cup because the labels on the washer dial had faded. Thinking a larger quantity would speed things, she added two pairs of heavy jeans as the drum creaked under the growing load. Before closing the door, she tucked in a small lavender pouch filled with scented beads, hoping the clothes would exit warmer and softer. Troy leaned on a plastic chair nearby, flipping coins; each quarter rang against the seat like a tiny bell while the machine’s door clicked shut and the cycle began to rumble.

Five minutes later the rhythm turned rough, a hollow boom pulsing like a slow drum. Fleur, thinking the drum still had space, had already piled a blanket on top of the jeans; now every spin tried to express more water from the squeezed bundle. With each rotation, a bright line of sudsy drops slipped past the rubber seal and pattered onto the tiles. The slope carried the streak toward the waiting area, gathering speed as the liquid stitched the grooves. Realising the wobble would only grow, Fleur paused the cycle and unlatched the door once the safety catch released. Steam hissed out. She gripped the middle towel—the first soft lump she had stuffed in—and hauled it away in one wet slap. The drum, instantly lighter, turned with a steady hiss instead of the uneven boom, and no further drops escaped. She used the rescued towel to blot the wandering water, then wrung it over the central drain so the last trickle vanished. Troy lifted the magazine and shook off a bead of moisture. Fleur gathered the half-filled laundry basket, carried it to the folding table, and placed it beside the stacked shirts. A bead of water rolled along the basket’s rim toward the drain.
