English 원문
The narrow slot on the tool jar showed a pale stripe where the wooden rib usually waited. Bea leaned forward, her fingertips brushing the gritty rim, and searched among pin tools and trimming loops. The rib had been forgotten in the basin; moisture coated its edge with a cold slickness. After wiping it dry, she set a soft clay puck onto the wheel head and pressed the pedal. The clay felt cool and dense, resisting her palm like damp bread dough. A steady pulsation travelled up her leg, and an aerial mist of slurry flicked against her sleeve. She aimed to raise a breakfast bowl with sides as even as stacked coins.
The moment the clay rose taller than her knuckles, it drifted sideways, tugging her thumbs toward the splash pan. Bea squeezed inward, forearms braced against her ribs, yet the wobble only narrowed instead of disappearing. She had watched the instructor balance clay with the same motion earlier in the week. If the speed stayed low, she could perhaps tame the drift without scraping the clay off. She eased the pedal, yet the softer outer ring sagged and opened a small rip around the rising wall. Grit from earlier trimming scratched beneath her left palm, reminding her how uneven wedging could hide inside the mass. A thin stream of slip slid down the form and pooled, making the wheel head shine like wet stone.
On the next full rotation, the same sag returned, spreading wider along the rim. The base had loosened its grip on the metal disc, and the bowl skewed like a slow top. Xavier, rinsing tools beside the basin, stepped closer and lifted the sponge to assist silently. Bea took it, pressing the surface against the clay’s base while Xavier steadied the opposite wall with two flat fingers. The extra moisture loosened the stubborn ring, and together they coaxed the shape back toward centre. The rib met the smoothed wall in a brief reunion, shaving away slurry until the curve grew continuous. By evening, long after the students had left, the trimmed bowl stood upside down on the drying rack. A thin grey skin stiffened over the basin water, and the sponge floated without motion. On the splash pan the final droplet hardened into a dull bead of clay.
