Flora bent over the gritty pavement, her woollen glove brushing rough sand. She set a dull silver coin on the cold stone border. Orson had polished the coin earlier until the whimsical pattern of swirls felt smooth beneath a thumb. Their goal was simple: slide that coin across the pale ice to the far bank before the softening edge sank under meltwater. If the coin slipped now, it would likely vanish under the meltwater gathering along the rim. Orson crouched on the border, his thumb poised against the coin’s edge, then he flicked with a quick snap. The coin skimmed forward with a muted ring, scraped a brave arc, and stopped beside the frozen leaf halfway across. A narrow groove had been etched in the cloudy surface. Yet the distance left was wider than two boot lengths, so they waited.

Flora stepped onto the edge ice to retrieve the coin. A hairline crack whispered under her heel and sent a thin splash of icy water over her boot. She hopped back to the warm patch beside the sunlit wall. She squeezed Orson's arm in a quick embrace and briskly knocked the meltwater from her sock. When the crack turned white and quiet again, Orson waited two breaths and timed the second flick. He watched a faint gloss of water spread across the centre, making the surface slipperier. Then he launched the coin from its earlier spot with a steadier, longer push forward. It glided farther, stopping a single handspan short of the opposite stone rim this time. Two bright scratches now formed a tiny narrative on the ice, each line recounting the ceremony of their careful patience.

Facing the shrinking rink, they knew one more push would end the game, yet the edge thinned by the minute. Flora moved first, choosing a patch where sand still provided grip, and counted quietly so their movements would not clash. On her third clear count, Orson flicked the coin with all the strength his chilled thumb could give. The coin slid over the earlier ridges, kissed the wet glaze, and toppled onto the far bank with a tiny metallic thud. At the same instant the softened edge under Flora’s other boot gave way and drenched her sock to the ankle. Laughing through chattering teeth, she squelched back to the border, leaving dark watery footprints behind her. The stone border that had been dry now glimmered with a thin wet streak along its edge.
