English 원문
The tallest slot in the wire cone holder showed only a scatter of golden crumbs. Pearl crouched beside the curved glass, hoping another stack hid behind the shorter cones in front. Her younger companion, Basil, tapped the fogged pane and pointed at a doodle of a smiling scoop chalked above. Warm pendant lights painted the front tubs amber, while the deeper row kept its firm, dull surface. Outside the window, a small tawny owl balanced on the wooden ledge, rotating its head with calm precision. Each time the door opened, the bell chime made the bird blink, yet it remained, feathers puffed against afternoon heat.
Five small cones still stood in the second holder, so Pearl straightened, confident her double scoop plan could survive. The queue advanced; every order lifted one cone away, and the stack dropped like grains through an hourglass. By the time they reached the scooping station, only a single cone leaned against the steel wall of the holder. Pearl had promised Basil his own serving, and his fingers drummed on the counter while vanilla steam drifted from the waffle press. She compared options: two scoops jammed onto that last cone, or one scoop each in plain paper cups nearby. Perception of the melting clock ticked louder as chocolate sauce had already thinned on the warm topping shelf. She nodded at the server, choosing one strawberry scoop for Basil in the cone and none for herself.
While Pearl carried the light cone toward the topping shelf, the owl launched from the ledge and glided through the open doorway. Its sudden wingbeat stirred a breeze that nudged loose cookie crumbles, sending a sweet flurry across Basil’s scoop like early snow. Basil laughed, eyes wide, and tried to catch one crumb with his tongue before it vanished into the glossy surface. The small cone held firm, yet a drip already formed at the rim. Pearl guided him toward the cooler stone step outside. A thin ring of melted strawberry circled her thumb as traffic hummed beyond the shade.
