English 원문
The screen door swung outward, revealing an empty patch of warm stone where the jar’s ornate metal lid usually glinted. Iris stepped onto the porch step and crouched, running her thumb across the faint circular mark left by sticky lemonade earlier. She lifted the empty glass jar, holding it ready for the first firefly now blinking beyond the screen of soft dusk shadows. Half a turn of her wrist revealed the fallen lid beside the garden-hose coil, its pattern showing a district leader in relief. The jar had come from a bright stall in the summer district fair, and the metal still smelled faintly of lemons. She tried to twist the lid back on, yet sugar grit and dew offered resistance; the waiting firefly slipped into deeper grass. Iris wiped her damp fingers on her shorts and stepped from warm stone to cool lawn, holding her breath for the beacon.
Her elbow brushed the lemonade glass, and a thin stream flowed across the porch step, trickling through the groove between two stones. The ribbon reached the dropped lid, loosening crystals until the rim turned tacky, then spilled lower into the garden where ants gathered. A quorum of ants circled the sweet pool like slow gears, their tightening ring threatening to crowd the narrow path Iris needed. She lifted the lid; softened sugar stuck to her fingertips, and she noticed the perfect seal it made over the jar mouth. Instead of twisting, she pressed the tacky rim down once, and the metal held fast without a sound. With one hand free, Iris cupped a firefly, guided it toward the glass, then lifted the lid wide enough for the glow. She slid the hose’s brass head onto a higher stone, stopping the lemonade flow before it reached the flower-bed mulch. At the rain barrel, a pale frog watched the quiet stream droop away from its toes. Then the frog sprang forward, legs slicing through the dim air toward a circling moth above the grass.
