He had planned to polish the pine block with that missing sheet, yet one extra turn of the vice handle rarely made a difference to grip, so he clamped the piece and chose a medium strip instead. Fresh strokes rasped across the grain; warm resin rose, mixing with the nutty scent drifting from an adult sharpening a pencil down the road of the long bench. As the surface began to transform from dull grey to honey, Axel paused and compared it against the smooth reference block, his fingertips brushing sawdust that tasted almost syrupy on the air.

A dense knot near one corner caught the paper, ripping it with a dry snap that released a sharper sap smell. The sudden sound startled a small gecko hiding behind the overhead beam; the lizard sprang onto the hanging strips, its tail flicking wildly and sending a thin silhouette of dust through the light. That twitch shook a waiting spider, which dropped on a silk line and landed squarely on the loose lid of the linseed jar; the lid rolled, bumping the mat and threatening to spill oil. Axel slid the brush under the jar, halting the wobble before any amber liquid escaped, while new habits of quieter movement took shape in his wrists. He had already planned to fetch another medium sheet, yet the jar’s push revealed a curl of pale paper hidden behind the vice, still coiled but beginning to unfurl. A mild cedar scent drifted from the newly exposed edge as the curled strip unrolled itself across the mat, rocking gently back and forth.
