English 원문
A pair of sneakers already blocked the narrow closet entrance; June knelt inside, sliding marker bins into a cardboard tray. Xander shifted his weight from heel to toe, the waxed floor tilting him forward like a slow wave. He aimed to pull thirty sheets of coloured paper for his group poster. The warning bell would ring soon, slicing the corridor quiet. The sliding door had been wedged halfway along its track since last maintenance week. It left only a forearm's width of uneven space between the panel and the shelving. Pressing both elbows against the cold frame, he pinched ten sheets through the gap, their edges brushing his knuckles.
June scooted back so the tray could pass her knees, and the extra shuffle opened another narrow sliver. Dust along the lower rail showed a stubborn streak, darker where cleaning cloths slowed near the jam. A curl of brittle tape clung with tenacity to the upper track, refusing to peel even when the panel shivered. Xander waited until June lifted a second box, then slid an arm in again and freed another ten sheets. That put twenty in his grasp, still short of the count his teacher had written on the board. Above them, the fluorescent tube buzzed with persistence, its vibration tickling the skin along his forearm. He noticed the buzz eased every few seconds, and he timed his next reach for that brief hush. If the stack slipped now, he would lose his grip, scatter pages, and start again. During the lull, he caught a final bundle of ten, the door’s rubber edge grazing his sleeve yet missing his wrist. Together, the thirty sheets flexed as a single block and slipped free into the brighter corridor air.
For a moment the corridor returned to solitude; distant lockers thudded as other classes moved on. Xander balanced the stack against his chest, then nodded thanks while June eased the door shut with her foot. The tape on the rail finally lost its resolve, letting the panel stay a finger wider than before. Near the stairwell, a custodian slowly guided a heavy mop bucket across the pale tiles. The bucket’s wheels rolled over a grout line and kept humming even after Xander disappeared through the classroom door.
