English 원문
"The belt hangs loose."
Zander tapped the slack leather with one finger, watching it flap near the warm shaft. Morning light from the narrow window painted amber stripes across the milling floor, and flour dust caught the glow like sparks. Beside the vat, Inez swept in slow circles; each stroke sent a gentle puff upward that drifted around Zander’s boots. His goal was clear: tighten the stretched drive belt before the next load of grain arrived. He reached into the tool nook, expecting the wooden wedge that normally kept the belt taut. Instead, only a tin oil can and a mallet waited on the shelf. The wedge had been stored under a stack of grain sacks, yet someone had moved the sacks for last night’s packing ceremony, and now the wedge was missing.
Zander decided to improvise. Gripping the mallet, he pressed the head behind the belt, hoping friction alone would hold it. The sails outside turned faster as a gust filled their canvas; through the doorway to the platform, he glimpsed their tips sweeping past the stone parapet. The loose belt snapped forward, knocked the mallet free, and the wooden head rolled across the bench, bumping the weighing scale. The scale swung, nudging a trio of filled flour bags; they slid, then toppled like short dominos, bursting a thin seam against the floorboards. A pale cloud rose, shimmered in the amber beam, and drifted toward the cloth chute, where clumped flour began to collect. The collision chain threatened to jam the stones unless the mill slowed.
He dashed up the spiral stair, palms sliding along the hand-rail coated with warm dust. On the gear floor, the teeth of the great wheel flashed copper in the light. Zander heaved the iron lever outward; the gap between the millstones widened, and the strain on the belt eased. Below, Inez brushed scattered flour back into a bin, her movements precise, almost repeating the earlier ceremony. Distant bells for village worship drifted through the slit window, marking the steadier rhythm that followed. Hours later, when afternoon shadows stretched honey-colored across the empty milling floor, the repaired wedge sat neatly beside the now-quiet belt, and a thin curl of flour dust drifted toward the darkened stair.
