The coat-hanger hoop, usually slick after weeks of use, felt surprisingly grainy where a silver bead of solder pressed against Ivy’s thumb. She rolled the metal between finger and palm, tiny ridges scraping like fine grit. The loop had been fashioned from an old hanger, and its cool curve slipped into the bucket. Soap solution clung to the wire, heavy and slippery, and Ivy lifted at a steady pace. A shimmering sheet formed, colours sliding downward. To reach the still space by the fence, she needed to wade through the damp patch of grass where earlier spills had pooled into a shallow puddle. Each slow step sent a dull tremor along her arm. Halfway across the lawn a faint gust rattled her sleeve; the film quivered, then burst, scattering cold droplets over her shoes. Ivy’s shoulders rose toward her ears, yet she turned back to the table, wet the hoop again, and prepared another try.

She traced the rough solder with a fingertip, leaving a thin coat of solution before dipping. Drake, sketchbook under his arm, strolled over and stood upwind. The top page carried an ink illustration of an old stone weir beneath leaning willows, cross-hatched with tidy lines. Without speaking, he formed a quiet wall between Ivy and the breeze. She lifted the hoop once more and angled it so the soap skin faced the fence. Bands of green, violet, and copper glowed while Drake leaned closer, giving her an affectionate bump of the shoulder. The sketchpad’s cardboard corner brushed the film; a soft sigh followed, and droplets sprayed outward. Several landed along a dusty slat of the garden bench, leaving narrow bright paths where long-set grime dissolved. Sunlight slid across those wet, clean stripes and kept moving across the wood.
