English 원문
Four neat chevron rows lay flat across the warm stripe of metal on the bench armrest. A pigeon hopped onto the seat, its claws scraping beside the loose fifth row that still dangled unfinished. Vera pinched the waxed green thread, the surface slippery under sweat-damp fingers, and tried to tighten the next knot. The bumpy tape anchoring the far ends had lifted, and grainy dried juice darkened the exposed glue. The bird pecked at crumbs embedded there, each quick strike shaking the anchor threads. Blake sat at the other armrest, arranging spare skeins inside a canvas bag. Each time the bag shifted, the glass beads inside rattled softly together. A glossy holly leaf skittered across the backrest and landed near the small dustpan they used for crumbs. Vera drew the thread and a wing-beat brushed her knuckles, jerking the pattern sideways into a tight curve.
She pressed a fingertip against the lifted tape, yet the loosened corner refused to grip. Crumbs and juice had begun to coagulate there, forming a sticky lump that clung to her skin. She tugged again, and the whole set of threads slackened, threatening to undo three tidy rows. A stronger gust suddenly lifted dust from the paving stones and made the pigeon leap. In its scramble, the bird seized a loose pink strand, dropped it near her shoe, and bobbed away. Vera stooped to rescue the thread, careful not to press the holly leaf’s spines against her palm. The rescued end now carried the same tacky blob that had weakened the tape earlier. She paused, rolled the lump between finger and thumb, and pressed it over the loose corner as a fresh anchor. The threads held firm while the leaf lay flat above them, shielding the sticky spot from the wind. Vera guided the waxed yarn into alignment, knot by knot, and the faint cling of the anchor pressed against her fingertip.
