Clyde pressed the taped threads against the bench armrest, feeling each strand stretch and rebound like a tiny bowstring. His forearms leaned forward, and the waxy fibres slid between thumb and index finger while a distant group of frolf players sent plastic discs gliding over the grass.

A rose-scented breeze crossed the shade-sun boundary, and the red strand lifted, spoiling the neat chevron that dipped like a hidden valley between two bright ridges. He pinched the red and pulled; the row straightened, and the colour sequence regained its line. The tug, however, drew extra tension through the whole band. When he wrapped the growing bracelet around his wrist for a quick intermission check, the curve tightened so sharply that one edge buckled inward. A folded zoning permit, wedged earlier under the pattern card, had been keeping the other threads level; fixing the colour had shifted the card and the stiff paper slipped away, loosening the anchor tape. If the anchor lost grip now, the loose ends would spring apart and scatter beads everywhere.

He weighed two options with his fingers rather than thoughts: unpick three knots and risk frayed fibres, or ease the buckle by spreading tension to the opposite side. Clyde chose the second. He hooked the green strand, slid his hand backward, and allowed a millimetre of slack to migrate along the row. The band relaxed, yet a faint ripple remained visible—evidence of the tradeoff—but the length once again circled his wrist without biting. He pressed the zoning permit back under the card as a new shim, then nudged the tape until it creaked against metal. The chevron lines now ran almost straight, and the slight ripple sat beside a centred glass bead, both flaws and strengths woven together.

Seen from the top branch of the nearby oak, the long bench would shrink to a pale dash between playground and field. Clyde lifted the half-finished bracelet toward the sunlit stripe on the armrest, the threads catching light.

他用指尖而非思考衡量兩個選項：拆掉三個結冒著纖維磨損的風險，或把緊度分散到另一側減少折痕。克萊德選了第二種。他勾住綠線往後拉，讓一毫米的鬆度沿著行列慢慢傳遞。手環放鬆了，但仍留下淡淡的波紋——這是折衷的痕跡——而長度再次能剛好圈住手腕而不夾肉。他把那份用地許可書再次塞回樣式卡下當墊片，接著推動膠帶直到它在金屬上發出細微皺聲。人字紋幾乎筆直，而微小波紋與中央的玻璃珠並列，缺點與強度一併編進圖案。

如果從旁邊橡樹的高枝往下望，長椅只會縮成操場與草地間的一道淡色。克萊德把半成品手環舉向陽光落在扶手上的亮帶，彩線閃著光。
