English 원문
A single handclap cracked against the salmon walls, and Ivy jerked her head: where had the extra rattle come from? She stood mid-stream, ankle-deep, while tiny rust-orange stones dashed ahead under the clear current, bumping each other like seeds in a drum. Up on the ledge, Wren lifted a marked stick, keen to count the distinct echoes racing back from the narrow passage. The guide waited farther behind, in a wider section the park called the sandstone foyer, staying clear but keeping watch. Ivy tried again, clapping harder, yet the returning sound tangled with the constant chattering of pebbles shifted by every swirl. She bent to scoop a handful aside, but fresh flow rolled in and refilled the gap before her fingers left the water.
A soft gust funneled from the ravine, riding over the water and carrying perfume, as though a florist had opened a door. The breeze raised ripples that nudged more stones; their rolling knocked against larger ones, and a rumble joined the busy chorus. If the wind slowed, the layered murmur would drop enough for a clearer test, but gusts arrived unpredictably. When Ivy pressed a flat stone with her boot, she noticed silence spread downstream for a second before water found another route. That pause gave her the first insight: the very rattle blocking them could act like a stopwatch once its beginning was predictable. She slid Wren’s measuring stick sideways, wedging it across the current; the bar formed a dam, and stones were trapped against it.
Water piled gently behind the stick, then spilled over in a smooth sheet that moved without bumping rocks. Ivy waited until the flow steadied, raised both palms, and clapped; the canyon returned a crisp, double echo, clear as glass. Wren counted aloud, “one, two,” perfectly matching the gap the pebble hush had just created. Behind them, the earlier chain reaction continued; each rolling stone now struck wood first and fell quiet before joining the stream. The guide nodded from the foyer arch but stayed where he was, watching the experiment unfold like slow lantern light. A ribbon of amber water kept sliding over the improvised dam while Ivy leaned closer, hands poised for the next clap.
