English 원문
“String feels lazy today.”
Ben tapped the tin rim against his ear, and its hollow echo returned nothing but his own soft breathing. Yesterday the can had boomed like a tiny drum, so the sudden hush struck him as a curious limitation. Golden grass glowed around his shoes while amber light slid across the hedge leaves in slow ripples. He traced the cotton line with two fingers and found it drooping where stiff twigs formed an obstacle course above the gap. With quick nimbleness, he lifted the string higher, looped it over a smoother branch, and stepped back onto the flat stone. The line straightened into a bright bar of sunlight, yet the can stayed silent except for wind vibrating its rim.
Across the hedge, Vivian lifted her matching can, her lips moved, and her shoulders rose in a puzzled half shrug. Ben answered by tugging the string twice, a signal they had used in spring; if silence lasted, their play would finish early. He pressed the can against his palm, turned it a quarter, and watched the silver thread quiver against a hidden constraint. Rotating again muted some tones, so he kept testing until a clearer murmur slipped through whenever the burr aimed toward the field. That hidden edge had always pressed against the cotton; he simply had not noticed its quiet work before today. Vivian’s can echoed at last, carrying her quick laugh that skipped along the string and burst around his ear like shaken grain. Deep inside the hedge, a robin guarded its quiet motherhood, barely fluttering even when the cotton brushed the leaves above.
Hours later, amber light faded behind the hedge and the clearing lay empty except for two cans resting beside the flat stone. The can still aimed toward the field, held by the string that kept a steady, silent tension. Dandelion heads leaned inward, and the warm light left copper streaks across the tin before slipping away completely. Under the hedge, the robin stayed quiet, and the cotton thread stopped glinting against the dim grass.
