English 원문
The sunlit edge of the plastic bowl felt strangely cool, while the shadowed side pressed a faint warmth against Lily’s palm. A sparrow fluttered onto the arena’s raised rim, claws ticking on the smooth surface before tilting its head toward the concave floor. Niles knelt opposite her, fingertips brushing the shallow grooves that a decade of spinning contests had etched into the plastic. He rolled a weight clip along the rim, testing its ridged sides for hidden cracks. Lily reached into the shared felt tray, its quilted bottom releasing a dusty scent as her fingers slid across the four remaining clips. Only four clips remained, and their quiet involvement with the tiny visitor paused every movement. The sparrow pecked at a loose cord fibre near the rim, then hopped back, leaving the thread trembling. Sunlight inched forward, trading warmth between their positions, and the silver scratches flashed like threads of held momentum.
Lily slid two lighter clips toward her disc, yet Niles’s palm settled over them, eyebrow raised in silent question. “The heavier pair is over here,” Lily murmured. He nodded, selecting the thicker metal, while she lifted the smaller ones whose edges felt almost brittle. Both crossed to the launcher station, winding the rough cord along the notched spindle until heat tingled across their knuckles. When Lily pulled first, the cord slipped slightly; loosened fibres gave uneven traction, and her disc skated into the cool half and lost momentum. Niles launched next, his heavier top gripping the warm plastic and humming near the centre. Deep grooves had been carved along the floor by countless collisions, yet each fresh spin redrew the pattern. The sparrow darted back, tugging at the dangling fibre now freed by the slips. Niles crouched, shoulders forward; Lily’s eyes widened as the bird tucked the thread beneath its wing. They stepped back, leaving the loosened fibres for future rounds. Lily lifted her disc from the bowl, and behind her the sparrow whisked the frayed strand through the open window.
