English 원문
The row of dry sponges on the bench showed an empty space where the largest one belonged. Jasper bent low, blue-grey sleeves brushing the shadowed table, and spotted the swollen yellow block floating in the wash basin. It glistened under the cool porch light, twice its morning size and raining silver threads onto the floor. He reached in; warm suds slid between his fingers and the sponge sagged with unexpected weight, slapping against his wrist. He carried it toward a frost-white patch of plastic chair, yet each step painted a darker trail across pale tiles, and the basin level dropped alarmingly. Jasper squeezed hard; a rush splashed over the target surface, leaving streaks that caught the light like thin glass. His first burst of diligence produced only spreading puddles, and the cat Poppy skittered away from the cold drips.
Beside the chair, an urn of pale stone rested, its rim dotted with soap bubbles. A wooden utensil—yesterday’s mixing spoon—lay across the rim of a plastic container that held spare cloths, and an open recipe book flattened beside it, pages speckled with icy droplets. The rinse bucket had been filled with clear water at first; grey swirls now clouded its steel-grey surface. Jasper swapped to the dense kitchen sponge; the green pad rasped, carving faint lines that flashed under the overhead lamp. He lifted the dripping giant again and noticed how its weight pressed bubbles away, sending a controlled sheet of water forward rather than a scatter. He planted the soaked sponge on the scratched tile, leaned his small palm down, and the broad surface released a steady, blue stream that chased every trace of soap into the drain. “Better,” he whispered. Water settled, and his fingers tingled with lingering chill.
Poppy padded back, sniffing the now-clear tile and watching the thin rivulet slide beneath the bench. The rinse bucket still looked cloudy, yet the cleaned section gleamed silver beside dull squares further along. Jasper set the heavy sponge on the staging edge; water dripped in slow pulses. When he straightened, a cool band circled his forearm, and the mild ache of repeated squeezing followed him toward the towel stack.
