A brown leaf spins down. Ella takes a long look. Old scratches line the log. New moss covers one end. Water keeps a soft whisper. A garden snail shell rests nearby. A wild iris tilts above mud. Sun flares on the surface. The glare hides small pebbles. Ella lifts her hand for shade. The pebbles return into sight. "See the bird?" the grown-up asks. Ella nods but stays still. Under the log, water darkens. A hanging drop grows heavy. The drop trembles, almost falling. Ella watches the bright bead. It leans toward the moving stream. The grown-up walks beyond the ferns.
