Daphne tapped across that slick surface toward the supply closet, aiming to collect a box of thumbtacks for the class notice board. The floor had been polished that morning, so her steps skidded slightly, and the metal hand-rail beside her felt cold-to-touch. Inside the closet, a glass jar balanced on the upper shelf, directly beneath a ceiling vent that blew warm air. One softened jellybean slid first, then the whole jar tilted; a glossy stream oozed over the rim and landed with a sticky splat around Daphne’s right shoe. She tugged once; the syrup clung like warm glue, and her sneaker refused to lift.

At that awkward moment, the school’s quirky pet cat, Orson—an affectionate lump of orange fur—squeezed through the half-open door. Whiskers twitching with clear mischief, he pawed at a small cardboard tray beside Daphne’s ankle. The tap loosened the tray, and thumbtacks poured out, skittering over the polished floor in a shining network of silver dots. Daphne bent, but the scattered pins slid away faster than her free foot could follow, while the sticky one stayed rooted. Another tug only spread the warm syrup wider, and her fingertips caught its thick edges.

The spreading syrup cooled quickly in the draft, thickening into a tacky sheet. Daphne pressed her freed fingertips into the sheet, then dabbed them onto the nearest runaway thumbtack; metal clung immediately. Seeing that, she stamped her sticky sole forward, collecting clusters of pins with every soft, adhesive step. When the flow neared the corridor, she dragged the recycling bin two centimetres, and its rubber wheel formed a neat dam that redirected the last trickle back toward the closet. Minutes later she hobbled past the bulletin board, pins peppering the syrup on her sole like bright seeds, while Orson padded behind. The glass jar that had rested upright now lay on its flank, a slow ribbon of coloured syrup creeping toward the bin’s metal wheel.
