A shaft of honey light cut through the dusty air and caught the bucket’s curve, turning the cramped room of sacks and scoops into a small feed emporium. A clay geranium near the door glowed like a tiny torch against the wooden wall. Dina scooped caramel-colored chaff, the dog’s collar ringing beside her, and followed the ochre path toward the rustic goat pen. Steam curled from metal troughs, and amber straw clung to her boots. At the gate she wedged the bucket under one arm and tugged the sliding bolt. Copper flakes fell; the iron resisted. Two goats leaned forward, horns tapping the rails, while the bolt stayed locked and the morning rhythm stalled.

A wheelbarrow rolled up, its rim catching early light; Liora balanced fresh hay and stopped beside her sister. A slim green mantis rested on the stubborn bolt, its body rocking like a slow pendulum. Liora slipped the hay between rails so the goats began to glean scattered stems instead of crowding the latch.
