English 원문
An earlier drizzle had left a faint sheen on the centre’s wooden ramp, and Zara’s shoes still showed pale specks as she entered the craft corner. The long table beneath the cool fluorescent cast held frost-white newspaper sheets, steel-grey ink pads, and a tub arranged for quarantine that held damp leaves away from the fresh supplies. Ives continued to organize coloured card at the far end while Zara selected a fern and set it beside an ink pad whose chrome lid sat like a small paving stone. She tried to pry the lid free; the hinge groaned yet refused to lift. She shifted grip, hoping to refine the angle, but the weight dragged her wrist down. After a third attempt, the pad remained sealed, and the session had been assigned twelve minutes earlier.
A cross-draft funnelled through the corridor, flicking loose newspaper corners and twirling the delicate fern off the table edge. Zara caught the stem in mid-air; a smear of silver dust from the ramp glimmered on its frond. She paused to ponder another approach while the breeze kept tugging at every sheet. She nudged a lighter lid on a nearby pad; it skated across the paper, yet her own lid refused to move. The very heaviness that blocked her now promised stability. She tipped the pad, let its mass settle over the curling stem, and the lid pressed the leaf flat against the pale sheet. Wind rattled along the window frame, yet the improvised weight held firm. Zara rolled the remaining pad, already faint with use, across the exposed fronds, cool ink spreading in blue-grey traces.
The print emerged sharp and detailed; veins shone like thin frost within the outline. Ives glanced over and murmured, “Nice catch.” The timer’s final bulb flashed, and Zara slid the last clean square of newspaper from the dwindled stack to wrap her damp print. No sheet remained underneath. She clipped the parcel to the end hook on the drying rack; every other hook already carried a finished piece. The empty stack rustled once, then lay completely still.
